Having a perfect pre-season and brimming with confidence the Whitton Lions travelled to play Hampstead 4ths, a team they had never beaten before so spectators were in for an exciting encounter.

Kiran kicked off the game, with Graeme rushing forward and batting the ball backwards into the hands of the Lions forwards. Through the backs Lions advanced up the field which was halted when Kiran was high tackled, from the resulting penalty Kiran found touch. Graeme throw into the lineout Dan and Paul lifted Zak high into the air and he managed to get finger tips to the ball to bat it into scrum half Sean’s hands. The ball was shipped to flanker matt who burst through the Hampstead defence, offloading to Kiran who sped off to the right of the posts being cut down just before reaching the line and offloading to the onrushing James Bowman to round off under the posts. Ryan converted Hampstead 0-7 Lions.

From the kick off Hampstead were able to gain possession and after some attacking moves spread the ball wide to score on the right wing, Hampstead 7-7 Lions and this score would set the tone for a high scoring game. The second try came with the Lions having pressed deep into the Hampstead twenty two, from a ruck near to their line Hampstead counter rucked scrum half Sean and the ball spilled backwards. Zak collected the ball seeing a large gap around the ruck and swerved round a Hampstead defender to score to the right of the posts, Ryan converted 7-14 Lions.

After this score Lions were hemmed deep into their own half for the large majority of the remainder of the first half due to a large number of penalties conceded and only brave defence kept Hampstead out. Eventually from a scrum Hampstead crashed over from a scrum and the score was close going into the halftime, Lions up by two at 14-12.

In the second half Hampstead had early momentum crashing through the Lions defence sending Zak flying back through the air and only Ryan’s try saving tackle stopped the score. Though from the resulting scrum and many phases Hampstead eventually scored to take the lead 19-14.
Lions then took the ascendancy in the match through two scores from centre Dom who burst through the Hampstead defence to put Lions 28-19 and it looked like the Lions were pulling away. With Six minutes to go disaster struck with men down injured Hampstead rampaged up field and scored under the posts, Hampstead 26-28 Lions. Kiran’s kick off went into touch and from the scrum Hampstead started to surge up field and when awarded a penalty tapped and ran, Hampstead cruising down the left wing throw a bass to kill Lions off! Kiran intercepts and races inwards twenty metres before offloading to fly half James who raced away to seal a bruising encounter 35-26.

After the hard fought physical encounter and other results in the league Lions sit fourth in the table and next week take on West London at Old Lats. Special mentions must go Paul our new prop, Jimmy for his hard graft and all the Sarries boys who helped out.
