CSSC Barbarians RFC
Whitton Lions RFC

Friendly Fire

After last season’s poor results in league five, Whitton Lions once again found themselves in the familiar surroundings of league six against our co-tenants CSSC Barbarians. It was the first game in charge for John PH, having joined after some negotiations in Murray Park a few months before.

Lions arrived with a strong squad of twenty four players owing much to James Bowman’s connections, Shunt showed up as well and Southern Steve made another appearance bringing along Andy.

Barbarians only had nine players so Jim enthusiastically gave away most of our bench including Marcus who would go on to score two tries for Lions.
Lions kicked off heading towards Nelson school and early on in the game found themselves deep in CSSC’s twenty two, a ruck a few metres out from the thin blue line presented lions with an early opportunity to score. Fly half Dan screamed for the ball, Zak filled in at scrum half passing the ball to his second row partner Ruairi who attempted to pass it on to Dan, though CSSC centre Oli intercepted and hoofed the ball down field.

The first try of the game came when Paul fielded a kick from behind the halfway lion and raced to the try line. The second try resulted from Adam’s sideways run across the field, Adam later admitting that if he had been watching himself run across the field he would have been in for some self criticism. Adam passed the ball to Angert who was caught near the line, from the ensuing ruck JJ channelled his inner forward to pick and go through loose ruck defending. Dan got the final try of the half on the right side of the pitch rounding Jim much to his annoyance.

Zak switched to loose head early on in the second half and did more damage than good; next time anyone watches People Doing Nothing watch out for Chapuddy G’s lazy eye. Though Zak got some bad Karma when chasing a kick and got an elbow in the throat from the CSSC fullback, who had the temerity to claim a high tackle, however Zak still smashed him.

The second half lions put in a much more convincing shift, having squandered a lot of possession in the first. Marcus switched to the team he was meant to play for and scored two tries from breaks inside CSSC’s twenty two. James got two and Adam one after he decided to run in a straight line. Paul rounded off his personal tally after Zak recycled the ball from the ruck and threw the ball in a quarter back fashion, with the Irish giant racing ninety metres he pulled the conversion to the left and was awarded DOD

Honourable mentions must go to John who has given us a new drive from the side line. In the forwards the front row paring of Matt and Alex who made some hard yards and hooker Graeme making some nice hits.
Zak as Dan admitted the only ruck lions lost was when Zak wasn't there. Wayne who continues to make metre after metre from the base of the scrum. In the backs Juan playing against his old mates at scrum half and Angert who keeps the backline flowing with great interplay.

Also thanks to Smurphy, Shunt, Southern Steve, Marcus, Jim, Hal and Andy who played for CSSC and made the game a much harder contested spoiling much of lions ball at the ruck
